Ayesha Dharker played her first film role at age 11, in a French
production called Maneka, the girl who lived twice (1989).
Her next role was in City of Joy (1992), in which she
played a rickshaw puller's daughter. Several years passed before
her amazing lead performance as Malli, in the
award-winning film The Terrorist (directed by Santosh Sivan).
The role earned her a
nomination for Best Actress at the National Film Awards ceremony
and the Cairo Film Festival award for Best Artistic
Contribution by an actress.
She next acted in Dev Benegal's Split Wide Open, and
her numerous television roles include
this year's mini-series Arabian Nights. She will play
Queen Jamillia in the next Star Wars film, expected in 2002,
and will be playing the lead role in the Merchant/Ivory production
of Naipaul's The Mystic Masseur.
Ayesha Dharker is the daughter of the poet
Imtiaz Dharker. Her father, Anil Dharker, is a columnist and editor of Debonair.
