This couple barely made it to their civil ceremony in Seattle :-)
We got our marriage license (Seattle,
WA) which was valid for 6 months. After a few months, we'd remind each
other once in a while that we probably should go to the courthouse before
it expired. Then one day, a professor with whom we both had a meeting at
3:00 p.m., moved it to 5:00 p.m., so he could make it to an emergency
meeting with the dean. The dim possibility of finding another time when we
both are free on a weekday finally broke the inertia. We called the
courthouse, gave our names to the clerk, and told we'd be there before 4:30
p.m., when they close. We rushed to our apartment, couldn't find the
blooming marriage licence. (Both of us being totally unsentimental and
irreligious, we failed to heed this unmistakable sign. :-) )
Anyway, we were there right when the clerk, secretary and judge were
wondering if they should go ahead and leave. They'd waited because they had
typed up the marriage certificate with the date and our long names. The
judge asked if we had rings to exchange, we didn't. She asked if we had
vows, and we didn't. After doing whatever it was that she had to do, she
then pronounced us married. All I remember is that she was a very old lady,
very sweet, and couldn't pronounce our names without giggling. We paid the
court clerk and the secretary $35.00 as witness fee.
That's it. Later (perhaps 5 years later after this marriage) I got myself a
wedding ring which I still wear.
