Ex-president of Temple University fraternity charged with attempted rape

#

The former president of a now-suspended fraternity at Temple University was charged with attempted rape as a part of a months-long investigation into sexual misconduct, underage drinking and drug use.

Ari Goldstein, 21, ex-president of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on charges of sexual assault and is being held on $2 million bail, ABC's Philadelphia station WPVI reported.

At least two reports of sexual assaults have been lodged against the fraternity, according to WPVI.

One case, involving a 19-year-old student at the Philadelphia school, has been referred to the district attorney, police said.

A separate case reported in March involved another 19-year-old student who said she passed out after accepting drinks from members of the fraternity, according to police.

"She was given several drinks by members of the fraternity," Philadelphia Police Captain Mark Burgmann said during a press conference last month. "She says she became dizzy and disoriented, and that's the last thing she remembered until she woke up in bed with one of the members of the fraternity."

Temple suspended the frat last month.

Jonathan Pierce, a spokesperson for Alpha Epsilon Pi, said the fraternity was cooperating with authorities and was "deeply troubled by the charges" against Goldstein.

"Alpha Epsilon Pi International has no additional information about the charges being brought," Pierce said in a statement Wednesday. "We believe in due process but there is clearly no place for this behavior in our organization and, if proven true, I would expect the individual to be permanently expelled from our fraternity."

Goldstein was removed as chapter president several weeks ago, before his arrest, Pierce said.

Goldstein is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 31. It is not clear if he has obtained an attorney.

My experience with frat guys is that the only way they can get a woman in bed is to drug her til she passes out. Sad. Why that relic from the 30s is still around is beyond me. Oh, and I was in one.

I hope they throw the book at him if found guilty.

Litigate the crap out of frats and the universities that house them, and more students might realize what a brain-dead exercise seeking acceptance from a frat is.

I once was having lunch in the common room of my college where 3 frat boys were nearby at another table having an audible and disgustingly explicit conversation about a girl they all dated. I got up and moved before I could throw my food at them. Noted, this was twenty years ago. Not too long ago, my college fell under fire when an e-mail emerged from one girl at a sorority berating pledges for not "interacting" enough with their counterpart fraternity. Sick. Back then, I stayed away from the frats and sorority life -- I can see now not much has changed.

If he is guilty, then I hope he gets a lot of prison time. It's a sad aspect of society that women cannot drink and be with the opposite sex and not have this happen. What kind of loser drugs women and rapes them? This falls solely the losers that do this, full stop.

When are these young men going to learn that women are not to be used as just "some warm place to put it"? These are someone's daughters and sisters and are not there to be used for their sexual pleasure. On the other hand, when are young women going to take more responsibility for themselves, by not putting themselves in positions to be taken advantage of by taking drinks from these guys. Both sides need to wake up.
