    Since the price of Bitcoin per coin has gone up over $300 since this cyber-blackmail first happen on May 12th this year is unreasonable to assume that the main culprit behind this world wide attack might actually be someone who owns large amounts of this digital currency? After all, going through this type of complex and massive attack for payments of a few hundred dollars or so seems kind of overkill and certainly not worth the risk monetarily.

    It is nearly impossible to determine with certainty. Even some of the Russian attributed hacks and Wikileaks are not definitive, just most probably.
