Sawnet - Bookshelf - Parveen Shakir
was a leading Urdu poet who, along with Kishwar Naheed and Fehmida
Riaz, has defied Urdu tradition by expressing the female experience. Four collections of her
poems have been published in over 20 editions in Pakistan and India. A senior civil servant with the
Pakistani government, Shakir had been a Fulbright Scholar in
Residence for four institutions of the Hartford Consortium for
Higher Education. She died in 1994 in a car accident.
