Attia Hosain

was born in Lucknow in 1913. She studied in La Martiniere school and Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow, and learnt Persian, Urdu and Arabic at home. She became a journalist and writer of short stories. In 1947 she moved to England with her husband and children, and produced a women's programme on the BBC for several years.

Attia Hosain died on 25 Jan 1998. Her great-niece is also a novelist.
